Portugal Tour 2019: from 11 to 15 November

The summary of the 3rd edition

On Monday, November 11, 2019 was held the day of administrative checks on the very elegant Marina of Vilamoura, for the crews of the 3rd edition of Portugal Tour ready to discover a touristic and cultural route of 1000km separating Vilamoura and Porto, and its historical monuments to visit.

Once the start was made, drivers and co-drivers left the Algarve under bright sunshine to reach the hills shaped with country settings of a “deep” Portugal before the planned lunch at the Pousada de Beja. The route then proposed fast roads to the beautiful medieval village of Monsaraz and a first tourist visit. In the middle of the afternoon, several “mischievous” changes of direction made it possible to reach Evora, city with streets and buildings testifying of an exceptional past and concealing of architectural treasures that the participants will have appreciated before joining the Convento de Espinheiro for the night.

On the classification side, the PARADA / COSTA team (BMW 2002 Tii) took the command of the “Classic” category, while the COLETTE couple performed well at the wheel of their Porsche 964 and took the lead in the “Prestige” category.

For the second stage, the competitors left Evora on a journey punctuated by traditional villages with white-painted houses often enhanced by bright colors and azulejos in areas of abundant crops, before lunch organized on the heights of the majestic Taje River. Many turns then drove the competitors to vigil on these roads lined with trees and sometimes littered with dead leaves crossing the huge eucalyptus forest not far from Luso, before arriving at the Palacio de Buçaco, incredible masterpiece of baroque and rococo architecture, term of the stage.

After a counter-performance by the COLETTE spouses, the “Prestige” category saw a close fight between the Porsche 718S of FARE / BARRE and the Porsche 997 of spouses PAPE; while in “Classic” the SCHARF Jaguar XK140 and BELIN / THOMAS (Alfa Romeo 2000) led the hunt behind PARADA / COSTA (BMW 2002 Tii), still strong leaders.

The third stage passing through Arganil, will be the scene of an unprecedented show, with the snow that was going to be invited at the time of the ascent to the Serra de Estrela, the highest point of Portugal. Cyril Neveu to take the decision not to walk this road wearing his white coat and which was no longer passable by the caravan of the rally. The route was then diverted by another slope before the lunch planned at the top, in a medieval inn. The roadbook returned to visit Sortelha, a beautiful granite village and climb a pass in a fog “cut with a knife”. Viseu was then in focus for the participants who had deserved their rest after a day like winter rally.

In the standings, this “truncated” stage marked status quo in both “Classic” and “Prestige” categories before the last stage.

From Viseu, the last stop was a dive into a bucolic Portugal made of autumn colored forests and small stone villages up to the entrance to the Oscar Quevedo Estate, along the stepped vineyards of the Douro River for a wine tasting .. The lunch was then held in the magnificent “Six Senses”, which became a point of passage for the Portugal Tour. The afternoon consisted of a course on more secret banks to the Pont Luis connecting Porto to Gaia for the final finish judged on the quays facing the cellar numbers of the succulent Port wine. The Yeatman Hotel, also a “must”, welcomed participants for a festive evening led by a local folk group before the awards dinner to celebrate the winners.

While BELIN / THOMAS crew (Alfa-Romeo 2000) had to give up on mechanical trouble, the Porsche 914/6 of LAIN / DAYNAC took third place behind the SCHARF (Jaguar XK140) who could not have destabilized the PARADA / COSTA crew at the “Classic”. In the “Prestige” category, FARE / BARRE (Porsche 718S Boxter) won the race by one point in front of the husband and wife (PAPE 997 convertible) and the McLaren 720S of the couple JEHLEN got on the third step of the podium.
